DOGS & CATS

tracks of dogs and cats

coyote & dog tracksIt can be hard to see the differences between the tracks of foxes, coyotes, domestic dogs and house cats! House cat tracks usually don't show claws, so the main problem is distinguishing between the members of the Dog Family. One problem is the many breeds of dog -- some pretty close to coyotes, and some close to foxes. In the picture at the right, notice how the bottom pads of both front and back paws of a mongrel dog are large, while the bottom pad of a coyote's back paw is narrow. Also, the back pad of the fox's feet sometimes has an upside-down V ridge across it. These differences hardly ever show up as nicely as I've drawn them, however. Just keep in mind that they do exist under perfect conditions, and you need to look for them when in fox and coyote territory.
