Rare North Carolina Mountain Visitor Sighted: Click here
The North Carolina mountains get a lot of tourists this time of year, but one of the rarest was sighted this past week at the Conservancy's Big Yellow Mountain Preserve in Avery County. Baird's Sandpiper, which breeds in the high Arctic and then migrates through the plains states to its winter home in the Andes and Patagonia region of South America, was photographed atop the 5,540-foot peak.

South Carolina's conservation community mourned the loss of pilot John Leuci, who enthusiastically carried bird researchers aloft for roosting surveys. Leuci, 45, died in an August 10 plane crash.

The Nature Conservancy Needs Your Help to Restore Oyster Reefs: Click here
The Nature Conservancy is continuing its oyster reef restoration work in the Pamlico Sound. Volunteers are needed to bag oyster shells and build the reef. Work days are scheduled for September 11 (rain day September 18), October 9 (rain day October 16) and November 6 (rain day November 13.)
