DOG EYES

During historic times no wrong-headed idea has been more of a threat to enduring Life on Earth than this one: That humankind is special in the Universe; that the Universe exists for us.

One of several monstrous offshoots of that belief is the assumption that here on Earth sentient beings other than humans have no consciousness or feelings, and thus can be treated merely as objects.

I was thinking about this while visiting a friend in Tepakán who rescues and rehabilitates abandoned street-dogs, though the effort hardly makes a dent in the town's homeless population. Below, you see one of my friend's lucky dogs, a big Husky named Iván, looking at me as I thought these thoughts.
